This is a true story. But before you read, I must state upfront that I believe God still speaks to people as a man speaks with his friend (Exodus 33:11), and that He speaks in different ways, mostly depending on our spiritual maturity. But none of what He speaks contradicts the Written Word. That assurance (not a disclaimer) will help you as you step into a time in my life when God gave me a suggestion, but I never knew I was in trouble for receiving that.

Some background details

I grew up in Ogbomoso, Nigeria; in fact, I have lived most of my life to this point in one place or another in Nigeria. My first degree was at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, and my hostel was about a 35–40 minutes walk from school. I lived in a community of believers, students who were living a discipleship-format lifestyle while studying at the same time. So, “What is God saying?” and “What Word has He given you?” were common questions in our midst.
